Crystal Mountain – Buck Quad Celebration – December 20, 2013

Buck Chairlift Dedication Ceremony & Celebration opens the Holidays at Crystal Mountain.

Countless hours of work since last spring and an abundance of snow over the last month will culminate in a celebration on Friday, December 20 (3-7pm) as Crystal Mountain officially dedicates the new Buck Quad Chairlift.

The ceremony will begin at the base of Buck at 3pm kicking off one of the most exciting times of the year as skiers and boarders take to the slopes for the holiday break. Lift tickets are 5 for $50 on Friday with a celebration featuring music, food and drink specials as well as prizes at Kinlochen Plaza near the new lift.

Thanks to some ingenuity from the founders, a simple tow rope transported the first skiers to the top of Buck in 1956 (photo available). Some of the very same people who were there that day will be on hand as Crystal breaks the banner (3pm) on a new Skytrac Quad, similar to the Loki Quad installed two years ago. The new Buck Quads capacity will allow skiers and snowboarders quicker access to the top where three new runs (Buckaroo, Buck Glades and Gorge Glades) await. The original Buck run has also been recontoured as part of this project.

The new chairlift as well as expansion and improvements to the slopes are only part of the $4 million investment the resort has made over the last year. Crystal has added snowmaking infrastructure and a PistenBully Winch Cat to its fleet, both of which were integral to the quickest winter start in the resorts history. Added seating in the slopeside Clipper Cafe and a remodeled Wild Tomato Restaurant also represent significant commitments that provide an enhanced experience for the thousands of guests that visit the resort each year.

Enjoy food, fun, giveaways and more! Celebration will be held at the base of Buck chair on the Kinlochen Plaza from 3-7pm.

Sleeping Bear Dunes – Saturdays at the Lakeshore

Explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore this winter! Join park rangers for a guided hike or snowshoe hike (weather depending) every Saturday throughout the winter. The first hike of the season will be on Saturday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. Meet at the National Lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire. If you do not have your own, snowshoes will be loaned out at no charge.

Inside the visitor center, park rangers will first provide basic snowshoeing instructions and then everyone will travel by car to the trailhead or area of the National Lakeshore pre-selected for that day. Once there, the park ranger will help participants learn about the park’s unique features and winter’s effect on them by exploring and discovering clues on site. Be prepared and plan to be outside until about 3:00 p.m. Dress in layers and wear waterproof boots to be most comfortable.

Reservations are highly recommended. Park Ranger-led snowshoe hikes are limited to 30 participants. For more information, please call the National Lakeshore at 231-326-5135, ext. 328 for details and to make reservations.

Not only is snowshoeing easy, fun, and good exercise, it is also an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. The park ranger-led hikes are mildly strenuous, yet they proceed at a leisurely pace for only one and a half miles at the most.
